DC Fandome 2021: The Batman New Trailer

Let’s face it, we were all waiting for this and it was the crown jewel of DC Fandome 2021!

As with last year’s DC Fandome, we got a presentation for Matt Reeves highly anticipated The Batman and it was the last thing we got to see at DC Fandome 2021 and boy, it did not disappoint. I had a feeling this would be right at the end of the night to act as a mic drop moment and what a way to end the show. It was great to have the Hall of Justice transform into the Batcave below Wayne Manor and then we got a conversation with Matt Reeves, Robert Pattinson and Zoe Kravitz, who were there to talk about the film as a whole and showcase the brand new trailer for The Batman and it was the highlight of the show without a doubt. I really think Matt Reeves is going to knock it out of the park with his vision for Batman.

Check out the brand new trailer for The Batman below:

Now, that’s how you do a trailer!

During the conversation between Matt Reeves, Robert Pattinson and Zoe Kravitz, we learn that this version of Batman is set during his second year as a vigilante/crimefighter in which we see this young Batman going up against Paul Dano’s The Riddler, where he has to investigate a series of murders throughout Gotham City. The trailer shows more of some of Batman’s allies in the form of Jeffrey Wright’s James Gordon as well as more of a solid look at Zoe Kravitz’s Selina Kyle/Catwoman. One thing I thought was really interesting is how Robert Pattinson screen tested for Batman wearing Val Kilmer’s Bat suit from Batman Forever, which is something none of us knew and that was such a cool insight into the behind the scenes of the movie. Already from the two trailers we’ve seen so far, you can tell that this version of Batman is going to be much different. He comes across as more unhinged, not sure on how to differentiate between Bruce Wayne and Batman and he’s much more violent and aggressive than the previous versions we’ve seen. Towards the end of the trailer you can see characters like Selina and even Penguin being stricken by fear and appear scared of Batman, which shows that he’s not to be messed with and isn’t in full control of his actions. To me, this is how the early days of Batman was in the comics that brutal and unhinged version still trying to figure out this new life and as it’s set during his second year, I think we’ll see a very different approach to the character than we saw with Christian Bale or Ben Affleck’s versions.

Matt Reeves went on to talk about how this version of Batman will incorporate more of this detective skills and show him more than being just a brutal fighter we’ve seen so far. I think that’s something we’ve lacked in previous versions of the character, not showing that detective side or his intelligence so this will be fresh and new going into this movie. It’s clear that this version will be much darker than we’ve seen and that’s how a Batman story should be told. Out of all the DC characters, he comes from a rough and darker place than the likes of Superman and Wonder Woman so I think this direction will be perfect. One of my favourite shots in the trailer is right at the end where you see the camera from the point of view of Penguin, upside down looking at Batman walking towards him in the rain and then the title screen fades in and it was such a badass moment.

I honestly think we’re going to be in for one hell of a ride in this film and I like how they’re sticking with this dark and gritty version and not watering it down to appeal to kids. Based on what we’ve seen in the two trailers, I honestly think that Robert Pattinson is going to surprise people and he looks like he’s zoned in to this character and putting his own spin on it. Also I’m really glad they’ve not gone for the Joker AGAIN. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Joker but he’s been done to death and I’m glad they’re going for The Riddler as it will be a different challenge for Batman. We got to see a few shots of Andy Serkis as Alfred in the trailer too and I think he’s going to be terrific in that role and couldn’t think of a better casting for a new version than Andy Serkis. I can see there being a great on screen dynamic between him and Pattinson.

Overall, DC Fandome 2021 really pulled out some great surprises and reveals for the next few years of amazing DC content coming our way in the different mediums. The things I’ve wrote about on the blog are just a few of the big reveals we got during the show but there’s so much more coming our way in the forms of movies, TV shows, video games, comic books and even more than that. I think that DC shouldn’t try to compete with Marvel in a sense of they don’t need to build a connected shared universe like the MCU. I think what they have plan will work to their strengths and if it eventually leads to a multiversal epic event then that could be the way forward for them. Regardless of their overall plan, the diversity of DC really is there and it’s great to see a variety of characters from different background and beliefs getting their own moment in the spotlight. The next few years for DC Comics content is going to be pretty awesome and I can’t wait for all this to kick start next year in 2022 with The Batman.

The Batman will be hitting cinemas on the 4th March 2022!
